Infectious diseases have profoundly shaped human history and evolution. While smallpox has been eradicated and polio largely wiped out, newer viral diseases - such as AIDS and Ebola fever - have emerged. Antibiotics are losing their power as a broad range of bacteria becomes increasingly resistant - causing some previously minor infections to become killers.
At the same time, sophisticated new techniques in molecular biology are allowing scientists to understand, combat, and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. In this series of four lectures, two scientists describe the latest advances in uderstanding how pathogens invade the body and how this knowledge is leading to the development of new therapies. They also explain how new infectious diseases are recognized and how epidemics arise.
